The waste heat recovery and upgrade technologies are characterized by their energy efficiency, a strong reduction in the demand for fossil fuels with minimal electrical energy consumption, the possibility of self-generation of electricity (ORC cycle), or reducing the costs of sensorization of large industrial plants (Seebeck effect), thus facilitating their digitization.

The Priority Technology Initiative (ITP) proposal promoted by the PTE-ee on Recovery and upgrade of waste heat in the industry, aims to describe the most relevant technologies whose development should be promoted and supported, highlighting their relevance in reducing the impact environmental impact of industrial processes and, therefore, in the transition to a carbon neutral economy. The opportunity and need to massively develop and apply these technologies is based on the characterization of the thermal demand and supply in the Spanish territory carried out by MINETUR.

The ITP - Development and improvement of technologies to use industrial waste energy including its conversion into other energy vectors that can be commercialized in the energy system, has been developed by the PTE-ee within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2017-2020.
